Sparring Classes 「撃剣」
Introduction
Come and play! These classes are held outdoors, in a park, and focus on the conversation of a duel. It teaches basics (such as footwork, strikes, blocks, parries, and other strategies). Focus is on sword mechanics, Japanese strategies, and sparring with your fellow students. Great exercise!
Each class starts with technique, which is studied using a wooden sword, and finishes with one-on-one sparring using padded swords. Heavy sparring, with steel katana, is reserved for advanced students. Classes are designed to allow drop-in training.
Unlike Kendo, this has a full range of combat, allowing changing directions and attacking any part of the body; it also does not rely on a bamboo sword. This traditionally would have been called "Gekkiken", rather than Kendo.
